The Old Bridge at Partick by William Simpson (1823-1899.)
The watercolour shows the view from Partick looking across the River Kelvin to Yorkhill, c 1850. The house in the foreground was once a Tavern called the Ark. Behind it can be seen the arches of the Old Partick Bridge, built in the late 16th century and demolished in 1895 when access was cut off by the construction of the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway. The building just peeping out on the right from behind the inn is the Bishop Mills with distinctive wheafsheaf finials on the gables. It was built on the site of an old mill in 1837 and renovated and converted to contain twenty flats 150 years later. Thanks to the Mitchell Library.

The Argosy was built on the grounds of the old Universal Garage in 1957. The Argosy was advertised as being a modern Roadhouse. Richard Brash was licensee, he formerly owned a pub at 78 Nelson Street in the southside of the city, when the pub was demolished he moved to the new Argosy. He also owned pubs at 245 Hospital Street and 233 Cowcaddens.
Many will still remember these pubs in the 1960s as The Cathcart Bar, 245 Hospital Street at the corner of 53 Cathcart Road and the Subway Bar at 233 Cowcaddens at the corner of 1 Cambridge Lane.

In 1898 Robert Alexander Nixon was landlord, he continued to run a successful business here until 1910. The rent he paid per annum was £49.00.
Robert Moodie then took over the pub, he also ran a good pub which survived through the two World Wars. In 1947 Robert was living at 24 Bruce Road, Pollokshields. The pub was taken over in the 1950s.
Mr George Greig was serving the locals in the 1960s.
One of the last landlords was Mr A McPherson before the premises were demolished in the late 1970s. Mr McPherson also ran pubs at 1287 Gallowgate (The Cross Bar) and 471 Scotland Street.
This 1936 group of Directors of the Glasgow and District Licensed Trade Defence Association with friends photographed at Glencoe on the occasion of the annual excursion. Directors include Messrs James Denholm, president, Archibald McNiven and P B Jackson, vice-president; Lawrence Brady, David Spiers, Peter Wharry, Alex Graham, Kenneth McLean, William Jamieson, Alex Lawson, Robert Moodie, D Stewart, and John Holmes, while others well known in the trade are Messrs George McCartney, Douglas A Wood, Jock Mills, Murdock Macrae, James Paterson and William Cosgrove.
Archibald McPherson ran this pub in 1887. In 1889 Robert A Burnside took over the property and turned it into a very popular bar.
