McDougall, John

May 16, 2017 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

293 West Campbell Street, Glasgow.

In 1892 Mr John McDougall acquired a public house from Mrs Morrison when he was only twenty eight years of age. The pub had already undergone interior alterations and redecoration when he moved in as landlord. John was a native of Islay, famed for its whiskies as well for its beautiful scenery. On coming to Glasgow, before he was quite out of his teens, he shortly procured employment with Mrs McIntyre, Antigua Place, latterly he was employed with the well-known and highly esteemed firm of Messrs. Brechin, followed by Sinclair & Doig. In this employment he not only gained the confidence of his employers as a most reliable man, but a complete knowledge of every branch of the trade.

Mr McDougall’s premises formed an important Celtic centre, his cosy, comfortable public house was the favourite rendezvous of Highlander’s, especially on a wednesday when country folk came to Glasgow. Mr McDougall was a well educated, and was a quiet, unassuming man.
