My Social media friends are debating the original name of the Smugglers pub.
I always thought it was The Smugglers Rest, some claim Smugglers Halt, others The Smugglers Inn….most of us called it, The Smugs for short.
Loved that Pub, so sad it sad to go.
Can you clarify please?
Thank you.

Hi Alan,
It was definitely called…
The Smugglers Inn, my Grandfather was the manager of this pub, Joseph Bonnar. It unfortunately got demolished and flats were built there even though the pub should never have been demolished as it was a listed building

My Grandfather, Austin Hendren was the freehouse owner of the pub from 1936 until, 1966. Its original name when first established was reportedly, Bonnie Annie’s; it was several centuries old. The building in his time was the original family cottage to the left and the pub on the right. Eventually, when the family relocated to Hamilton Road, Mount Vernon, the cottage was converted into a lounge. The tenement building to the right had a Tunnock’s the baker’s shop on the ground floor. The name, Smugglers Inn was a fabrication after my grandfather sold the pub in 1966 when he retired.
