Worked there in the late 80’s – loved the place; Christmas day and NY was very special and for many of the older boys the only time they saw anyone else that day. Used to chuck in some free chips and bread to the old boys and get told off by management.
At times it was like we played host to a Scotrail version of the Wheeltappers and Shunters Club, accommodating those who worked next door.
Punters were great to the staff, if you treated them well they looked after you (let them have tabs etc)
Remeber the place well when Big Joe Siels ran the pub, and you had the likes of Nasty Boab (Rab McNielage) taking liberties , Franny Siels (later murdered by Brother Joe in Cushions Snooker Club, then you had Speedy, Jason Mcinnes, Les McGuiness so many characters.
Nasty Boab (Police Informer) was a liberty taking wrong un, walked in and cut Jason Mcinnes throat well he was doing a piss. Big Joe was sound, Franny a Bully, Derek McDonald roaster who just hung around as Frannys runner, they all got put in place when Big John Simpson started putting himself about the place.
Big John Simpson had everyone terrified so much so they had to sneak in and shoot him in the head while asleep which he survived, 3 weeks later they never missed but Big John was still fronting them up.
The death of John Simpson created overnight so called Gangsters for a while who fortunately have met there maker.
Yes, I remember many happy days in The Cart. Was at Car D College in 1985 with many Friday lunches, and then afternoons, feeding the jukebox. Pat Benatar, ZZ Top and Talking Heads regular favourites. No idea what was taught on Friday afternoons as never made it back after lunch.
My grandad, Tam Dingwall was a regular, if not every day. The Cart was his local. God bless you all.
