In the News 1973…
A prominent Hotel in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, has been bought for an undisclosed sum by Celtic captain, Billy McNeill and two business partners.
It is the Wester Overton in Hamilton Road, which figured in a licensing wrangle until it was allowed to go “WET” as a result of a veto poll.
Name change
The new owners are Milnrow Development Company, whose directors are Mr. McNeill, chartered accountant Frank McCormack, and ex-Celtic, Hibs, and Motherwell centre forward Joe McBride.
Mr. McBride confirmed the deal and said the company would take over the Hotel on February 1. This is their first hotel venture in Lanarkshire. At present they own the Coylton and Fenwick Hotels and Tornyard licensed restaurant, all in Ayrshire. The name of the hotel is likely to be changed to the Strathaven Hotel. 1973.
