Westerhouse Road

The Centaur.

November 17, 2016 by John Gorevan 6 Comments

Westerhouse Road, Easterhouse, Glasgow G34 9PD. Tel: 0141 771 3109.

The Centaur. 1991.

The Centaur was opened in the summer of 1971 by Provan M.P. H D Brown. Tribute to the directors of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries for their interest and initiative in Easterhouse centre.

The Centaur consisted of two lounges and a function room all named after local districts, Brunstane Bar, Lochend Lounge and the Wardie Suite.

The decor was of the most modern conception, reflecting great credit on the designers, who had used colour freely to create an atmosphere of comfort and murals to emphasis the historic place the neighbourhood has in the growth of the West of Scotland community.

A few years previously the suburb of Easterhouse had an unenviable reputation as a “trouble spot”, unrest being attributed in part to lack of amenities, and Scottish and Newcastle were to be congratulated on providing a place of public resort in which local residents can take pride and kill the impression that they are “outcasts.” 1971.

I am sure many will disagree on this promotional advert of the area and many will disagree in the fact that Scottish & Newcastle brought even more trouble to the area when they opened the pub.
