The Gate

September 16, 2022 by John Gorevan 1 Comment

251 Gallowgate, Glasgow, G4 0TP

The Gallowgate pubs are evolving! This fantastic pub is located directly across from the Barrowland Ballroom and we must say that the staff are probably one of the friendliest folk we have ever spoken to in a pub! (that is quite a claim!) The staff were very chatty and bubbly and make you feel like part of the family when you visit.

The interior of the pub transports you to a quirky and very classy world with such a great atmosphere!

The Gate boasts over 160 whiskeys, 30 gins, and a selection of craft beers and wines, this is definitely somewhere that you should visit to experience the new age of the Gallowgate.

Does the public trust Glasgow pubs to be safe during Covid 19?

April 30, 2021 by John Gorevan 1 Comment

We recently ran a survey on our website to ask the opinions of fellow Glaswegians to see how much faith they had in our Glasgow establishments being Covid safe and to find out how many people are looking forward to going back to support their local pubs as soon as we were allowed to.

The survey showed fantastic support for Glasgow’s pubs with 85.71% of people eager to visit their local as soon as they opened and 80% confident that pubs would make sure that they are fully covid safe.

Since the pubs have opened we have seen tabled huddled under umbrellas in the outside seating areas to make sure they get those pints down their necks and have a gab with pals that they may not have seen in a while.

From us at Old Glasgow Pubs, please keep safe and if you feel it is safe to do so, support your local pubs. It has been a very hard year for the majority of businesses, but small pubs have taken a massive hit and showing your support will help give them hope for the future!

PALACE BAR

March 15, 2021 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

WATERSIDE VILLAGE

Thank you to Scott for these brilliant photos of the building in 2021. You can view his Instagram page here

Here is an excerpt from the Historic Environment Scotland Website about this old pub in Ayr:

Built circa 1850 for Dalmellington Iron Company, with later extensions. Original building symmetrical 2-storey, 2 by 4-bay, with central 2 bays advanced and chimney-gabled at both front and rear. Blind oculus in gablehead at front. Extended to NE, in later 19th century, to form L, with 3-bay frontage and 4-bay side elevation in style similar to original. Both buildings piend-roofed in Scotch slate, with 8-pane sash and case windows. Chimneys on end walls at gableheads and on ridge above original NE end wall, all originally with stacks linked at base and cope. Small single storey flat-roofed extension to SW, of later 19th century, absorbed into large single storey flat-roofed extension along whole of frontage, built circa 1900 in Beaux Arts style, with red sandstone cill band, cornice and parapet cope.

Principal entrance of extension open-pedimented, with channelled pilasters, 3 large windows to left, 2 to right (latter reduced in depth), with circular window (now rectangulr) bayond to right and subsidiary entrance to extreme right. SW curved corner of extension treated as feature, with flanking channelled pilasters.

INTERIOR OF BAR: simple varnished wooden gantry in Glasgow style and plain boarded bar.

Statement of Special Interest

Company store for Dalmellington Ironworks, subsequently converted to bar. Only surviving ironworks store in Scotland, particularly important for its relationship to the uniquely well-preserved remains of the Dalmellington Ironworks and its supporting village.
