The Snapp Bar

The Snapp. 1930s.

This old Kinning Park hostelry was owned by James Shanks in the 1880s, Mr Shanks owned some of the best bars in the city of Glasgow including 80 Cowcaddens, ( W T Doherty’s,) 72 Maitland Street, 32 Hamilton Street, Govan. In the 1870s he started out in the Royalty Bar, West Nile Street. Mr Shanks held the licence for Cornwall Street until 1904.

James Reid then took over the pub, he held a licence for another pub at 226 St. James Street, Kinning Park. Mr Reid continued as licensee until the 1930s when the pub was refurbishment and renamed to the Snapp Bar. Wine & Spirit merchant William B Frew then occupied the premises.

After WW2 the pub was run by George Mullen, George went on to own the Snapp Bar, London Road in the east end of the city, he also owned the Blythswood Bar, Clydebank.

The Snapp Bar was demolished in the 1960s.

The Doctors

The address of this pub is actually Cornwall Street, many people search for this pub on Paisley Road West. Names this public house has been known as “The Doctors Arms,” “The Doctors,”  “The Bellrock.”

This was originally the Doctors. The pub’s name was changed to the Duke in the early 1990s but was changed back to the Doctors a few years later as every one in the area still called the pub by it’s original name.

The Doctors also known as the Doctors Arms was actually situated at 4-6 Cornwall Street and never had an entrance to Paisley Road West.

In 1896 Andrew Paterson Drysdale was the owner, he paid and annul rent of £90.00. There were three other public houses on Cornwall Street and a licensed grocers.

Clutha Vaults

In 1899 Ernest Tough was landlord here, the family ran this popular Kinning Park public house until WW2.

After the war Robert S Fulton was licensee.

The last licence holder was Simon S Schuster, when this old pub was demolished in the 1960s he removed to the old Subway Bar, 49 Cornwall Street and old pub formerly owned by the Cavana brother’s.

In 1919 there were four pubs sitting on Cornwall Street, they were the Doctors Arms, The Subway Bar, Reid’s and the Clutha Vaults.
