Mr. Alex Laing changes job
Mr. Alex Laing, formerly with Sandfman and Sons Ltd., has joined the sales force of Whyte and MacKay Ltd., as their representative in the central and north Glasgow area.
Mr Laing has been a well-known figure in the licensed trade for the past 32 years, having spent 18 years with Tennent Caledonian, five years with Samuel Dow and Co., and five years with Ronald Morrison and Co., of Edinburgh.

In the News 1974…
White Horse Distillery Ltd., have appointed Mr. J. D. Turnbull as company secretary. He succeeds Mr. E. M. Campbell who will continue as a director of White Horse. The appointment comes into effect immediately. Mr. Turnable (36) joined White Horse as assistant secretary in 1971, having previously held posts in the whisky and paper manufacturing industries.

Mr. John Dunn.
Mr. John Dunn, assistant to the managing director Mr. George Teacher Dunlop, has retired after completing 50 years with Wm. Teacher & Sons Ltd., He reached the retirement age of 65 in September 1973, but was invited by the board to remain with the company until January 11 to earn the distinction of completing half a century.
John Dunn joined Teachers in January, 1924, as an office boy at 12 shillings a week when Mr. William C. Teacher, father of Teacher’s president, Mr. Ronald Teacher, and Mr. William Manera Bergius, father to Teacher’s chairman, Mr. Adam K. Bergius, were responsible for the fortunes of the company.
He rose to become chief clerk and office manager before becoming the link between the staff and the board, in particular with Teacher’s former home sales director, Mr. Jack Smart, with whom he liaised over the development of Teacher’s distilleries at Ardmore and Glendronach. Mr. Dunn’s retirement was marked by a farewell dinner given by the board.

It’s Chaplin and the Keystone Cops again!.
Teacher’s bring back the silent for a celebration.
The Silent Film era is to be brought back this month by William Teacher & Sons, Ltd., to mark their move from their present London premises, which were formerly a cinema.
After occupying warehouse premises are 118-120 Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, for the past 11 years, Teacher’s are moving towards the end of this month to larger and more modern London premises, at Westpoint Trading Estate, Westfields Road, Acton, where they will have 14,000 sq. ft. of storage space as against 4,000 sq. ft. in their present premises.
The Jamaica Road warehouse was in fact in pre-war days, the home of the Stork Cinema where local Eastenders used to join the “tuppenny rush” to see the silent film epics of the Keystone Cops, Charlie Chaplin, Pearl White, etc.
To mark the company’s departure from the East of London to the West, Teacher’s for three nights are going to transform 118-120 Jamaica Road into the days of the silent film era. On January 27, 28 and 29 the Stork Cinema atmosphere will be re-created. There will be an Old Time bar, jellied eels, roast chestnut, pease pudding and faggots, a Pearly King and Queen, and a pianist with a hony-tonk piano of the period!
Keystone Cops and Charlie Chaplin films, and a newsreel of the times, will be shown on each of the three evenings when the guests will be 600 licensees and off-licensees, who are being invited to dress for the night in the 20s and 30s period. 1975.
Highland Attraction…
In 1970… The Strathisla Distillery, Keith, had acquired a couple of Highland cattle, named Pinky and Perky, after the childrens tv puppet show of the time. Mr Stewart McBain, operations manager, said:- “Throughout the summer the firm’s distilleries are toured by many overseas visitors, and invariably they as to see Highland cattle. I would have to send them to Rothes Glen. Now I need only point out of the window.”
Whyte & Mackay aim to make this a “Vintage” year 1970.
Whyte & Mackay’s special Scotch whisky will be available in an attractively designed “Vintage Car” gift carton from November 1st 1970.
For a limited period customers will receive part of their orders in gift cartons at no extra charge. Thereafter there will be a nominal charge, but this will add only a fraction to the cost.
The new gift carton will be featured prominently in Whyte & Mackay’s consumer advertising, using the slogan “Make this a ‘Vintage’ year1”
Sixteen different vintage car models, the oldest being an 1897 Daimler, make up the design of this unique carton.
Whyte & Mackay will now be one of the few standard brands on the market to be available “gift wrapped!”
Mr John Ligertwood, sales director, said the design of the carton had been chosen because of the general interest in vintage motor cars.
“Vintage car enthusiasts are numerous, and include our chairman, Major Hartley Whyte,” he added. Supplies of the gift cartons can be obtained flat ready for packing existing stocks.

Glasgow Visitors to Harp Lager.
A party of licensees’ from Glasgow who visited the Harp Lager Brewery in Edinburgh were welcomed by Mr. A. T. Wilson, Scottish sales manager, Harp Lager, and accompanied by Mr. D. Crines, Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd., and Mr. R. Simpson, Arthur Guinness Son & Co. Ltd.

Harp Lager Ltd., announce the appointment of Mr. Terry Doherty as sales manager for Scotland and North-East England, following the retirement of Mr. A. T. Wilson.
Terry Doherty joined Harp in May 1973, following a successful sales career in Guinness, with whom he was latterly administrator for Scotland and North-East England. 1974.

Brothers who are not rivals.
Meet two brothers in the licensed trade, Tom (left) and Lockhart Ferguson. But they are not rivals. For Tom is on the brewery side as managing director of Whitbread (Scotland) Ltd., while Lockhart is sales director of the champagne and wines firm of H. Parrot & Co. Ltd.
Parrot, agents for the well-known champagne house, Veuve Cliquot, gave a luncheon in Glasgow last week for a few trade friend to sample their Louis Latour Burgundy, Trimbach Alsace and Anheuser Nahe wines.
After the excellent quality of the wines shown was praised, guests were served with Parrot’s Premier family reserve cognac. 1974.
Messrs. John Haig & Co., distillers, Markinch, sent out a blotter which formed a capital advertisement for their celebrated “Glenleven” whisky, 1893. There was a verse for every month in the year, and the rhythm is after the style of Longfellow’s stirring poem, “Excelsior,” which had been ingeniously paraphrased to suit the occasion. For example:- “Tis nectar for the gods, he said; Before my weary way I trend, I’ll stand with pleasure glasses round, I’m more than happy now I’ve found- Glenleven.”

In the News 1974…
Matthew Lamont, better known as Callum, has taken up a new appointment with Peter Thomson (Perth) Ltd., that of product manager, table wines. His duties will be mainly concerned with wine development and marketing.
Before joining Thomson’s three years ago, Mr Lamont was in business on his own account in Irvine. He and his wife have four of a family, and have now made their home in Abernethy.
A good deal of Mr. Lamont’s time will be spent helping hoteliers with their wine lists, and he will be prepared to travel anywhere in Scotland to assist with wine problems.
