The New Inn

March 14, 2017 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

7 Avenue End Road, Glasgow. G33 6ND.

New Inn

The New Inn. 1991.

The last time I passed this pub it was closed down. Early 2005. The formal opening of the New Inn took place on 27th September 1954 after a long struggle to get the place opened, the residents opposed the idea of licensed premises on their door step.

The new design was fitted out by Archibald Hamilton & Co Ltd which consisted of a large open public bar and a smaller cocktail lounge. Red hide seats was used in the cocktail lounge with green hide in the public bar.

Mr James Ironside, Glasgow manager of William Younger & Co Ltd, formally declared the premises open. The new owner was Mr Joseph Chambers.

Neil Mckay Neil Mckay new

Before and after alterations’ 1930s.

Neil McKay’s bar was situated at the corner of Paisley Road West and Lambhill Street.

Alexander Wands a city wine and spirit merchant acquired a licence for these premises in 1879. Mr Wands already had licensed premises in King Street, Glasgow.

Paisley Road West was not part of Glasgow yet.

Alexander opened other pubs in the city of Glasgow including plush establishments in Kent Road and New City Road. His brother’s James and William were also involved in the spirit trade, they had premises in Ardgowan Street.

Neil McKay took over the licence in 1930 and continued until the 1950s.

The last licensee for this popular pub was Manus Gallagher who ran the pub during the 70s.

Napoleon’s

March 6, 2017 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

128-134 Merrylee Road, Glasgow. G44 3DL. Tel: 0141 629 1900.

Napoleon's

Napoleon’s. 1991.

Napoleon’s was built on the site of J & A Ferguson Ltd, Chocolate manufacturers and bakers. Now called Rare Bird. 2007. Tel: as above.

Napoleon’s latest name is ‘The White Elephant’. Previously Merrylee Road
Bar and Kitchen. I think it had other names since it opened as Napoleon’s,
will try and find out for you – unless you have details already.

Napoleon’s opened in 1984. The owner was Sylvester Sweeney, who for several
years beforehand ran The Mulberry Hotel at the corner of Camphill Avenue
and Langside Avenue. The Mulberry’s name changed several years ago and is
currently known as ‘The Ivory Hotel’, bar and restaurant. I remember
Sylvester left Napoleon’s and took over Seamill Hydro. His online profile
shows he has been proprietor/owner at Seamill Hydro since June 1989.

I took the pic of The White Elephant this evening. As always, I’ll try and
get a better daylight pic without umpteen cars blocking the view.

Thank’s to Tich Keltie for his email.
