Scottish & Newcastle

Renovate four of their Welcome Inn’s.

A WARM WELCOME BACK TO THE INN’S…

It’s cheers all round for regular customers at four of Glasgow’s Welcome Inns for Scottish & Newcastle Breweries, who own the inns, have reopened four of their most popular pubs after spending more than £100,000 renovating them.

The Pubs are the Iron Horse in West Nile Street, the Atholl Arms in Renfield Street, the County Roadhouse in Springboig, and the Loudon Bar in Duke Street.

Two had been badly damaged by fire while the two others underwent extensive face-lifts. Now all four have reopened, just in time to make Christmas for their regular customers a specially happy occasion.

The Atholl Arms in Renfield Street is a typical Glasgow pub with a warm and cosy atmosphere. The pub was closed for two months while it was given a complete face-lift inside and out, and reopened just under two weeks ago.

Mr Sandy Chalmers has been mine host at the Atholl Arms for twelve years now and takes pride in being on first name terms with all his regular customers. He is particularly pleased with the interior decoration of the pub and feels that the warm red upholstery makes customers feel really at home.

The Atholl Arms has always provided snacks, and this service has been reintroduced since the pub reopened.

The Louden Bar in Duke Street has always been known as a man’s pub. But now that it has been refurbished it is the ideal spot for a couple to enjoy a pleasant evening out.

About £25,000 has been spent on the small but cosy pub upgrading the decor. Regular customers will realise that the pub is bigger than it was. That’s because Scottish Brewers took over an adjacent close and by knocking down some walls have incorporated it in the bar.

The new decor is in the 30’s style with lots of cigarette ad mirrors round the walls, and the floor has been semi-carpeted. As manager John Dillon, who has been at the Louden for about three years, said: “The pub has been closed for about two months but I think the time and money spent has been well worth it.”

This Horse is a great bet…

The Iron Horse is one of Glasgow’s most popular pubs, particularly with the younger set.

Until it caught fire Last October, The Iron Horse operated on three floors, the basement Sidings Bar, the ground floor lounge and the first floor restaurant.

In order to re-open the premises in time for Christmas, Welcome Inns decided to redecorate the ground and basement floors only. A plush restaurant will be re-opened on the first floor next year.

The Sidings Bar has been transformed into Senor Chic’s, where meals will be served with a distinctly Mexican flavour.

The Iron Horse re-opens today.

It was December 13 last year that the lounge at the County Roadhouse in Springboig was destroyed by fire. The Lounge was always very popular with local residents and it was a bitter blow to them and manageress Mrs Patsy McGuckien.

But last week a new Lounge/ restaurant was unveiled, which promises to become the main attraction in the Springboig area. “We have live music every evening and cabaret on special nights. Soon we hope to be able to hold dances,” Mrs McGuckien explained.

The menu in the new Lounge/ Restaurant will have dishes like gammon steaks and haddock, but Mrs McGuckien plans to have a more extensive menu should her customers desire it.

The decor in the new lounge is very bright with circles being the main theme. Much of the seating is in semi-circles.

Scottish & Newcastle Breweries have spent £60,000 on the County Roadhouse, but they think it will be worth it.

Lord Nelson

The Lord Nelson. 1991.

This old established pub is now a Rangers football fan pub with red white and blue every where. Watch out for the dour faced barmaid, I have never seen such a sad looking barmaid in the city of Glasgow, she must realy hate her job or maybe it’s the customers she doesn’t like.

There’s been a pub on this site since 1850 formerly owned by Mr Steel a cowfeeder and dairyman.

The Imperial Bar Review 2015

6 Howard Street, Glasgow. G1 4AZ.Tel: 01412218217.

 November 2015.

The Imperial Bar Howard Street image

The exterior of the pub has been recently been updated and is still fresh. When we walked into the pub we noticed that the pub has not changed very much.

The paintwork inside was recently done and looked very clean. The Imperial bar was taken over my “Perfect Pub Company” over 2 years ago.

We spoke to the Manager Yvonne Rooney. Yvonne was really helpful and didn’t mind having a chat about the pub and it’s history.

The stained glass panels that were on display in the windows have now been moved to the back of the pub, around 10ft high. The panels look really great on display with the lighting. The old sign Columbia is not on display but, is currently downstairs. The owners are going to clean it up and put it back on display.

Entertainment-wise There are two TVs at either side of the gantry that has BT Sports.

The gents toilet was small but, had everything it needed. Soap, hot water, toilet paper and hand dryer. The only complaint about the toilet was the smell.

There is no dedicated smoking area (Outside front door)

The price of drink was reasonable for the city centre. Malt of the Month (Shieldaig) is £2.00 House whisky (Whyte & Mackay) – £1.70 Bottle of Corona £2.50

In conclusion, The Imperial Bar has come along leaps and bounds and it show’s as the pub is a lot busier than it was in the past.

2009-2010 New Year Party at the Hielan Jessie

February 7, 2020 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

Party Time

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Staff and owners of the Hielan Jessie Mr & Mrs Billy Gold for a wonderful Hogmanay party. My wife Pauline and I had a great night out.

As soon as my wife and I got out of the taxi we were greeted by Billy Gold in highland attire. Billy’s wife Josephine poured us both Morgan Spice and coke on the house and sat us down next to the roaring coal fire, it was so cosy and welcoming as it was so cold outside with freezing fog and ice.

The Hielan Jessie has always been noted for not having a TV and Duke box of puggy machines, however in the background you could here scottish music playing to give a great atmosphere.

Snacks were placed on each table and afterwards Josie lay on Sandwich’s crisps and cakes. Josie never stopped all night, she was rushing about making sure everyone had enough drinks and snacks and even entertained the guests with her lovely singing voice. Billy often calls here a Duracell battery! I was waiting to see her crash as the night went on but she never did, Josie went on and on and on. Great host….

Just before the bells everyone was given a glass of bubbly to celebrate the end of 2009 and to bring in the new year 2010. I cant thank Billy and Josie and the staff enough for a magic night. The guests were so friendly as well, we all had a sing song danced and partied all night.

I wish the Hielan Jessie all the success for 2010….. Cheers….

As I have said over and over again this is the Jewel in the Crown of East End Pubs.

Thanks again Angela for the great image.

If you would like to upload your photos taken from that night just send me your images. Happy New Year………..

UPDATE…

03/08/2013… A sad day, Josephine McCormack, Billy Gold’s partner in the Hielan Jessie passed away today. Josephine was diagnosed with cancer.

Ten days later she passed away in Stobhill Hospice. She will be remembered for her bubbly personality, a lady that loved to sing country and western songs. Josephine had been spotted chanting in some of our city pubs. It wasn’t long ago that Billy and Josephine welcomed my wife and I to their Hogmanay Party 2009-2010. Josephine then was the sole of the party. I will remember her as a kind, friendly and generous person. R.I.P.

The Griffin Review – 2015

February 7, 2020 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

266 Bath Street, Glasgow. G2 4JP. Tel: 01413315171.

The Griffin is well known as of recent for their comical, yet controversial chalk messages/drawings. The signage and paint on the exterior was very good. There is no dedicated smoking area.

Inside the Griffin there are 3 bars. One as soon as you walk into the pub, one at the back and one in the function room. The bars are called the Griffin, the Griffinette and the Griffinay.

There is a wide range of drinks available at standard prices for the area. The Bar staff greeted us as soon as we walked into the bar and made us feel welcome. The pub was clean and the staff had their cleaning supplies at the ready.

The toilets could have been better though. The toilet roll holders were broken and one of the hand driers were hanging off the wall. There is also no disabled access to the toilets at all. The bar staff helped a wheelchair user up the first two stairs towards the toilet, then left him there to reach the toilets. The wheelchair user tried to continue, but there was another big step to the toilet. So he was stuck in the middle, not able to go anywhere. Thankfully there was someone going to the toilet at the time that helped him. a simple portable ramp would have solved this ordeal.

For entertainment, The Griffin has a comedy club and holds many different nights in the function room. There is also food available and it smelled delightful!

The Griffin Family that owned the bar before Mr & Mrs Mullen, come over from America to visit the bar regularly and love that the pub has been kept traditional.

This is a great pub if you are popping in before/after the theatre or if you fancy a pub with some nice food and friendly regulars. I would definitely recommend.
