This old Cambuslang local was once called Chester’s Bar.

Mr John Morrison. 1948.

Mr John Morrison was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He took over premises at 82-84 Main Street, Cambuslang around 1929. He previously was manager for Mr A Thomson who held the licence for premises in Wallace Street, Glasgow.

Mr Morrison was keenly interested in Trade activities, he was a member of the Scottish Licensed Trade Defence Association in 1942 acting as Managing Committee and had served on the Executive Committee of the Scottish Licensed Trade Veto Defence Fund. He was President of the Cambuslang Association with which he had been identified for some years.

John Morrison’s favourite pastime was bowling, a sport in which his enthusiasm and skill had brought him international honours. In 1946-47 he represented Scotland against England, Ireland and Wales, and in July 1948 he was again honoured by being selected to play at Edinburgh in the Test Match against America.

In connection with Cambuslang Bowling Club, of which he was past president, Mr Morrison had won numerous competitions, including four Presidents’ competitions and on three occasions the Club Championship. Since 1941 he was a member of the Glasgow Ex-Presidents’ Bowling Club. He gained another notable success in 1942 when he won the Glasgow District Championship and went on to complete at Queen’s Park in the Scottish Singles Handed Championship.

Tommy McAvoy MP defends purchase of County Inn

TOMMY McAVOY MP this week explained how he had financed his purchase of the County Inn in Cambuslang.

The Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP was speaking after reports in a national newspaper said he was coming under pressure to reveal full details of how he financed the purchase of the troubled boozer, which has racked up debts of over half a million pounds.

Mr McAvoy bought the County from Cambuslang millionaire Willie Haughey, who himself has come under pressure due to close links with the Labour Party.

Figures published suggest that Haughey made a profit of £176,250 on selling the County, which he had owned for just a year.

However, Mr McAvoy, who will retire at the next General Election, slammed the report and said the entire deal had been financed by himself and a bank loan, thought to be in the region of £200,000.

He said: “Unfortunately, the reporter chose not to report my categoric assurance that the County Inn purchase by me went through the normal process of business plan, independent valuation and business loan application.

“Also not reported was my categoric assurance that Mr Haughey did not provide, in any way, financial support for the purchase or subsequently. The deposit was paid out of my, and my wife and family’s, pot of savings.”

“The purchase of the County Inn was bought with a combination of a business loan from a High Street bank and family savings.”

Mr Haughey said he had never met Mr McAvoy socially and that he had no idea how he financed the deal. Opposition politicians said in the interests of fairness, Mr McAvoy should publish a full account of how he financed the deal.

Conservative MSP for Glasgow, Bill Aitken, who described Mr Haughey’s relationship with the Labour Party as “incestuous,” said: “In the present climate, transparency is essential,” while John Mason, the Rutherglen-born SNP MP for Glasgow East said: “I would call for complete openness, because there’s a whole level of suspicion here between Labour, the council and some of these outside business people.”

According to official documents, Mr McAvoy bought the County Inn, on Dukes Road, for £381,875 in 2001.

The pub is listed in his Register of Interests and is run by his son, Michael.

The Reformer reported last week that Willie Haughey had come under fire after it was alleged he had been unfairly awarded public sector contracts. Thanks to the Daily Record.
