Chubbie Chester’s

November 28, 2016 by John Gorevan 14 Comments

178 Ingram Street, Glasgow, G1 1DN. Demolished.

Chubbie Chester’s. 1990s.

This was a great pub during the 1980s, at one time there were 11 stewards on the premises. It was flooded went on fire and was soon demolished afterwards in the 90s.

During the 1980s this pub was known as Zhivagos, owned by Tony Ghani and wife Anne, they also owned Blackjack’s in Hope Street. Alec Nicol the DJ was resident in both these premises, I remember him well, he had a fantastic voice and played great music, he would have been great on one of the major radio shows.

After the flood and a refit Mr & Mrs Ghani sold the place and less than a year later, they bought a place at Hogganfield Loch off Cumbernauld Road, but it was a white elephant, a few years later it was set on fire and closed down.

I drank in Zhivago’s for years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Still friends with many of my drinking buddies back in the day. Don’t know if names such as Macho, Elder, Lex would ring a bell with you.

I worked behind the bar at Chubbie Chesters in about 1992-1993. I remember it being on Sauchihall Street. Am I remembering incorrectly, or was there another Chubbie Chesters? Does anyone know what year it burned down?

Was owned? by Tony Capaldi and his wife Sue before that they ran Capo’s in Bellshill, they also had the Hatrack in St Vincent Street before Chubbies.
After Chubbies burnt down they moved to Tenerife and opened a Chubbies there they ran other very successful bars in Las Americas.

Yes Chubbies was owned by the wonderful Tony & Sue Capaldi, great hosts ! I remember it was the first place in Glasgow to ever have Karaoke with the DJ Jim Stewart and Don Sobel (I think that was his name). It burned down on 25th January 1992 and moved to Sauchiehall Street but was never quite the same.
