Sloan’s.

November 9, 2016 by John Gorevan 1 Comment

108 Argyle Street / 62 Argyll Arcade, Glasgow. G2 8BG. Tel: 221 8886.

Sloan’s. 1991.

Sloan’s is the oldest restaurant in the city established in 1797.

One of the stained glass windows in Sloan’s.

To read more on the history of Sloan’s read my book.

Two years ago Sloan’s was taken over by Colin Barr, and had a face-lift despite it being a listed building. Colin is well known in Glasgow and owns the Bier Halle Republic and the Salty Dog, when he took over Sloan’s it was the first time he was the owner of a tavern. It was renamed Bastille’s.

It was a very hard job to take over such a large project as Sloan’s has suffered over the past ten years or so with so many bars and restaurants in the area competing for the same customers. This became a reality as his new project closed a year afterwards in 2006.

Various views of Bastille at Sloan’s August 2005.

Sloan’s was part of a chain of pubs owned by Alloa Breweries which included Rogano, Victoria & Albert, The Barasserie in West Regent Street.

The St Andrew’s Day Dinner of the Royalty Burns Club, held in Sloan’s, with Mr Robert Meiklem presiding, was one of the most successful of the series.

The company of 130 made a record collection of £86 for the Burns benevolences, the appeal for which was made by A Laing (Sandeman and Sons).

Pictures above are J K McIntosh, immediate past president; R Meiklem, president; H McCrostie, secretary; P Robertson. Can you identify the man on the far right?

Well-known licensees’ of Sloan’s were William Hunter-1874 to 1898. David Sloan- 1899-1930s. Walter Myron 1940-1970.

The Talisman.

November 9, 2016 by John Gorevan 2 Comments

149 Balgrayhill Road, Springburn, Glasgow. G21.

The Talisman. (Baron) 1991.

The Talisman was opened in 1966 by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries. This new venture consisted of a function room, a dining room, lounge bar, a public bar and an off sales.

In the lounge the Talisman theme was captured in a large mural by artist Charles Anderson. It showed knights in chain Armour, a horseback battle between a knight and a saracen, and an argosy under sail.

Facing Springburn Park this looked the part when it opened in 1966.

The bar counter was an eye catching feature with its front of snow white bricks. On the same floor as the lounge was the function room and the dining room. It had a large dance floor made from Canadian maplewood, surrounding this was a blue patterned carpet.

Downstairs in the public bar was decorated in red and dark blue. The resident manager was Mr W McIntosh and assisted by his wife. Mr McIntosh was previously manager of the Provanmill Inn and formerly of the Central Bar, Tollcross and the Drum, Shettleston. Ruby Walsh was in charge of the lounge bar and Mary McGowan looked after the main bar, both ladies assisted Mr McIntosh in the Provanmill Inn.

The old Talisman in a poor state. If is ready for demolition, it has been set on fire and looks like a bomb has hit it. 2009.

Update 2019…

The Talisman is still not demolished and is just a shell left of its former self.

Facts…
