In the NEWS 1978…

Scotland’s comedy entertainers clubbed together today and brought out a World Cup special.

Comedians Mr Abie (left) with Benn Gunn on his right, and Tony Duncan (extreme right) handed over a two and a half foot World Cup cake to Glasgow’s taxi-drivers children’s outing.

The presentation took place at the Ballochmyle Bar in Duke Street, Glasgow. The cake, which has a large ball made of icing as its centre-piece, is to be raffled among the pub’s regulars.

Also in the picture is the pub owner James Mortimer, who is in front of Archie McPherson of the BBC.

Can you name any of the guys in the image above?

180 Watt Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow.

Ballochmyle Bar. circa 1897.

The Ballochmyle Bar was situated at the corner of Watt Street and Ardgowan Street a public house that only lasted a few years. Mr James R Leitch the proprietor took over the pub in 1899, paying an annul rent of £39.

James was born in Main Street, Govan, he attended school at the age of seven under Mr Allan, at what was known as the Half Way House between Paisley and Glasgow. On leaving school he became an apprentice to the baking trade, which after a year he joined the staff of Mr Crawford, Grocer, Paisley Road, then to Mr Copeland in Maclean Street, where he remained for five years.

He then left to work with Mr William Buchanan a licensed grocer in Dumbarton Road. With an insight into the liquor trade James went on to work with Mr Bennet, wine & spirit merchant, Wilson Street, Glasgow where he remained for seven years. James then became his own boss and took over the new premises in Watt Street.

James was married in 1891 to Miss Sarah McCutcheon of Straiton, Ayrshire. He was a Free Mason of Lodge 581 and a Free Gardener of the Rose of Sharon.

Up-to-date NEWS…

2013…

Over the last few years Baird’s Bar has been in the news over drunkenness, violence, drugs. Today 9th February 2013 Baird’s Bar is closed.

“Clean-up” claim pub is shut down…

Baird’s faces licensing board for third time.

A Glasgow football pub has shut down after being summoned by the authorities for the third time in less than 18 months.

Bairds Bar, in Gallowgate was closed with immediate effect after claims staff cleaned up a crime scene before police arrived and following a drugs arrest on the premises.

Last year it received a written warning after a lock-in months after it had been banned from opening during the day.

Baird’s had been ordered to provide extra stewarding when Celtic play and to serve drinks in toughened glass but was accused of ignoring these conditions. Any appeal or re-application will take many months.

At a hearing of Glasgow’s Licensing Board, it was claimed that last September, on the day Scotland played Serbia, the police received a call from the ambulance service about an incident.

The police report said CCTV showed patrons involved in a “vicious attack” while staff make no attempt to separate them. The police added there was a 15-minute delay between the fight and a call for an ambulance.

The complaint adds: “Inquiries revealed that the bar staff had cleaned up the crime scene prior to police arriving.”

There was no suggestion at the hearing that the staff had committed any offence.

The police also arrested a customer for carrying cocaine following complaints of drug dealing in the bar. Representing Baird’s, lawyer Niall Hassard said staff were unaware they were clearing a crime scene.

But board chairman Malcolm Cunning said there had been “a pattern of incidents”. He added: “From the CCTV footage what I saw an almost forensic clean-up.
