Before it closed its doors for good in 2007, Archaos was the hottest place in town.

Archaos was one of the best night clubs to be seen in. Footballers and Celebs were often seen in here. In the NEWS 1997 notorious Charlie Sheen hit headlines after partying with Gazza at Archaos. This club was a one off, the average clubber would meet Celebrities and footballer, the door-men let anyone throw the doors.

The Viking Bar. Queen’s Bar.

William Miller was born in Rutherglen, his father for many years conducted a bakery business in conjunction with a licensed house in the Burgh. The shop was very popular and the pies which he served became a notable feature of the establishment. William Miller served his apprenticeship with his father in the bakery trade. When his father died his mother took over the running of this thriving business, William then took around 1888 and acquired a new licence for premises at the corner of King Street and Queen Street in 1894.

William then severed his connection with the bakery trade to devote his time to his new public house. William stayed in the same house for 48 years afterwards moving to Jedburgh Terrace, Rutherglen. Mr Miller loved bowling gaining many trophies for his efforts, he was a member of the Rutherglen Bowling Club, a member of the local Curling Club. In the trade he was a member of the Benevolent Institution a life member of two masonic lodges no.116 and no347., he was also an honorary member of the Rutherglen Fleshers, Free Gardeners of the British Order, Member of the Eastern Merchants Society and if this was not enough for him, in his spare time he loved to fly the doe’s (pigeon’s,) and was a dog lover.

Another well known publican to own this pub was Robert Williamson who took over the licence in 1931. Mr Williamson’s son Robert took over the running of the pub and added a new lounge bar in 1957. The pub was called the Queen’s Bar and the Viking Lounge.

A few years ago I was in the pub just before it was refurbished, the name above the door has now changed to Dr. Gorman’s, the lady serving drinks behind the bar is Mrs Williamson daughter of Robert Williamson. The pub is not in the Williamson family any more but she has insisted on staying on serving the locals, so the family connection is still there.

The Crammond

The Crammond Bar.

This was originally the Crammond Bar. There’s been a pub on this site since 1848 run by Mr D McIntyre.

James Lighbody was running this public house from 1850, he also occupied licensed premises in Abercromby Street in the east end of the city. When James died his wife Margaret took over the pub, the family ran this successful pub until the end of the 1880s.

In 1890 Archibald Carruth was the new landlord, he served the public here but found it increasingly difficult with so many pub in the area. His barman John Howieson went into partnership with him trading under the title of Carruth & Howieson. Mr Carruth sold the business to partner Mr Howieson in 1900.

John Thomson Howieson was born in 1869, on leaving school he was sent to learn the trade as a plumber. On his first day he was requested to clean out the toilets, he decided this was not for him and never returned, instead he entered into the services of the licensed trade as barman in Queen Street with Mr Carruth.

John marry a Rutherglen lass on 25th February 1890, he married 19 year old Agnes Killin, a power loom weaver who was then, like John, living in Rutherglen. John took over the Queen Street business in 1900 and renamed the premises The Crammond Bar after his favourite place near Edinburgh – the village of Crammond. Mr Howieson was not simply a publican he was a spirit merchant which meant he blended his own whisky, John Howieson’s special blend of old Scotch whisky was a favourite in the Crammond Bar for years.

Mr Howieson took over the private bar in the Trades House, Glassford Street. He kept his accounts as meticulously as he blended his whisky. Many years after his death, his granddaughter, Effie, began work in the Clydesdale Bank in Glasgow. There she was told about “this publican who kept the most perfect books”. It was her grandfather they were talking about. John, with his waxed moustache, was said to be “crabbit” (bad-tempered) – due perhaps to stress. He had a breakdown with the worry of paying back the loan on the Trades house bar.

One of his sons James Howieson followed in his footsteps and became a publican in the Railway Tavern, 520 Rutherglen Road. He was also an International footballer.

He started drinking, and died of gastric neoplasm at the age of 57, on 8th June, 1926, at 15 Dunard Road, Rutherglen. He left £6000, a considerable sum at that time, enough to buy 12 houses. His wife Agnes took over the pubs for a year, but she made no money, due perhaps to the dishonesty of employees.

Another well known spirit merchant to occupy the premises was Alexander Cameron, he run the Crammond Bar during the 1930s till 1960. Many will still remember Stewart Shaw licensee who took over in 1961 and ran the pub successfully for many years.

The name of the pub changed to the Sundowners, the photograph below was taken 1991.

The pub has had a refurbishment inside and out and a new name “Naill’s”.

Yet another refit and a new name, this time it is called “Drouthy’s.”

Facts…

In 1897 Mr Robert Shields was licensee he also owned a public house in 31 South Portland Street.

In 1899 licensee Archibald Carruth paid an annual rent of £195.

There has been licensed premises here since 1848.

The Bank.

It’s sad to see this very old establishment has now got a different name BLACK’S, I don’t think anyone will take much notice of this as everyone will still call it The Bank regardless.

Peter Hamilton was proprietor of the Bank in 1893, he also owned premises at 276 Argyle Street.

The Bank is gone forever and was refurbished around 2003. However the older generation will still call it THE BANK. The pub now is called Muse it still has the black paint-work outside and the layout is very similar to the old Bank.

In the NEWS 1977…

The New Bank can cash in..

Regular customers of the Bank Restaurant in Queen Street will have been aware that their favourite howff has been receiving a bit of a face-lift recently.

But now the good news is that work has been completed and the premises, re-named the New Bank Restaurant, will be operating to full capacity from tomorrow evening.

STYLE

The pub and restaurant now features a newly decorated upstairs bar with booth tables and seats in subdued lighting around the central bar. Hot meals and snacks will be provided here, but the main dining area is downstairs in the light pine paneled restaurant.

“We are very proud of the new place” says manager Mr Joe Hayes. “We reckon we offer a good meal for a very fair price at lunchtime, and in the evening this is an ideal place for an intimate meal.

“At weekends we will be running dances.” The fine touch of style at the restaurant is the fresh uniforms for the team of girls serving there.

Visitors to the bar will have a chance to sample Joe’s own private cocktail, the contents of which he is determined to keep secret.

And for connoisseurs of the “cratur” there is a wide range of malt whiskies. No one is quite sure how long a public house has been operating on the Queen Street site, but it is thought to be one of the oldest in the city.

BRIGHT

It was owned by Mr. W. Myron, a well-known figure in the West of Scotland licensed trade then bought by Ind Coope (Scotland) Ltd. in 1964. One of Glasgow’s favourite bars and restaurants seems well prepared to open its doors on 1978 with a bright new face.

With good food, good wines, Skol lager, “Diamond” beers and attractive surroundings it should prove to be even more popular.

The Bowery is closed down, I cannot wait until someone comes along and makes a great pub / Bistro out of this once popular establishment.
