The Blarney Stone.

November 10, 2016 by John Gorevan 1 Comment

30 Caledonia Road, Gorbals, Glasgow. Demolished.

Blarney Stone. 1991.

It was sad to see this old favourite Gorbals haunt demolished. A new housing development now occupies the site. The Blarney Stone sat at the corner of Caledonia Road and Thistle Street.

This old pub dated back to 1863 when William Ross occupied the premises until the beginning of the 1870s, William also had a pub in John Street. Mrs Paul took over the licence for a few years before William Thomson took over.

Mr Thomson also ran pubs in Thistle Street, Crown Street, London Road, Crownpoint Road. William resided at Hutcheson Square before moving to Langside.

Sam Service took over the business in 1903 until 1930s, Frederick Seils then took over the pub, he had other establishments in Stockwell Street. The Seil’s had the Blarney Stone for over forty years.

The Blarney Stone with flats above date unknown.

The Blarney Stone had a name change when  Augustine (Gus) Seils owned the pub, it changed to “The Gweedore Arms” and was changed back to the Blarney Stone as the locals still called the it Seils and the Blarney Stone. This happened to many pubs in Glasgow, when someone comes up with an idea to change the name of a pub and the locals will still call it by the old name. So all you publican’s out there think very hard before you change the name of your pub.

Thanks to Norrie Mcnamee for this old photograph of the Blarney Stone.

Blarney Stone. 1980s.

Thanks to Willy Devlin for the following email…

I remember the Blarney Stone as the pub my dad always went to every
night. Willie Devlin was his name and he was part of the pub and its
folklore! He helped repair or upgrade parts of the interior along the
way as he was a joiner to trade. We went there as a family 7 brothers an
sisters on occasion and there was always a face you knew and spoke too
and had a laugh! Famous for its pictures of Paul McStay and the Pope
behind the bar it was obvious where its leanings were but I never saw
any trouble in all the years I went. I used to pass it when I was a
young boy and remember there used to be a guy selling papers just around
from it…a guy with a limp!….I remember the day they decided to lay a
new carpet!.OMG it was purples and oranges and I’m sure there were many a
sore heads blamed on the vibrant colours! I was there on the last day
when it closed with my mum, dad, brothers and Wife and it was a sad  but
enjoyable evening. we ended the night by going into the chippy next door
for chips and fritters!.an the short walk home to Oregon Place where my
mum an dad still live….. Its a bar that is forever missed but will be
remembered as it was part of my life and part of my family.

Hope this is ok and you can drop it into your site…well don’t by the
way…the whole place brings back memories of Glasgow!

828 Crow Road, Glasgow. G13 1LE. Closed.

B J’s. 1991.

This pub is now permanently closed.

On the 21st of April 2015 at around 06:25 a black 4×4 Jeep crashed through the window of this popular bar.

Update September 2016:

Domino’s Pizza have submitted a planning application to open up this former pub as a take away. Unfortunately the chances of this opening back up as a pub in the future is very unlikely.

The Auld Hoose

November 9, 2016 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

212 Carmyle Avenue, Glasgow. G32 8EQ. Tel: 0141 641 3862.

Auld Hoose, 1991.

Mr John Cameron, Licensee and Proprietor 1901.

Glasgow can boast of no sweeter suburb among the many of them than of Carmyle. Pleasantly situated on the Clyde and within three or four miles of the great city, it was in former years the Scottish Oxford where all in principal boat-racing events were contested. The Sylvan beauty of its surroundings scenery is beyond compare the most rural of all Clydeside villages, for Carmyle is but a village, yet, with a population of under 1,000 but extensive iron works and coal mines in its near vicinity constitute a place of no small importance and its salubrity as a health resort is well known and appreciated, particularly during the summer season.

Carmyle people are proud of the fact that there is no pawn shop in the town, such is not required there as one can guess from the air of prosperity that pervades over and round it. At this season of the year the rooks are busy preparing their nests in the many adjacent trees, and remarks passed by these intelligent birds on the stranger who passes beneath them do not at all sound complimentary.

It is here that Mr John Cameron has fixed his abode, and he prospers well. Mr Cameron got the rudiments of his knowledge of the Spirit Trade with Messrs. Stewart, Potts & Co., Miller Street, Glasgow, one of the first firms in Scotland, and built “the Auld Hoose” some three years since. The building which he owns is worthy of the proprietor and the town. Internally it is fitted up in the latest style with all the modern improvements, tiled lavatories with abundance of open space and light. The mahogany counter is of the horse shoe shape with stock barrels arranged at the end, and everything on the premises is kept spick and span by willing waiters.

By paying special attention to his business in all its detail Mr Cameron has made a phenomenal success, and is bound to be one of the amenities of the rising town. A large amount of trade is always being done here and that always in a quiet, orderly manner, rendering police services almost unnecessary. The coming summer evenings will bring humming times to Carmyle and its rejuvenated “Auld Hoose.”

Mr Cameron is also lessee of the Patterson Range Wine and Spirit Stores, 32 Main Street, Pollokshaws, where a brisk business is carried on. It is right on the road to Glasgow, opposite the Town Hall, or Town House, and is capably conducted by a younger brother.

Mr Cameron has faith in comfortable rooms with good fires, as much as in a good glass of beer, or a rare dram of good old Highland Whisky. Here the daily newspapers can be scanned leisurely with more than “the comforts of the Saltmarket.” Convenient to the railway station it proves a great boon to parties either leaving the ancient burgh with the queer folk on their way to Glasgow, or those returning from thence. Mr Cameron, as the name is sufficient to suggest, is a sterling Highlander, being born in Stontian close to fifty years ago, and is the happy father of a large family of boys and girls.

Auld Hoose, 2005.

131 Byres Road, Glasgow. G12 8TT. Tel: 0141 339 3252.

Aragon, 1991.

Aragon, 1980s.

This is quite a new pub, opened around 1970. It was formerly a butchers shop. Very popular bar in the West End. Student flock here in there droves from the nearby University.

In the good weather seats and parasols are placed outside where locals can enjoy a nice glass of wine or whatever takes your fancy and watch the traffic going by.
