The Parkway

March 15, 2017 by John Gorevan 2 Comments

1592 Paisley Road West, Glasgow. G52 3QY. Tel: 01418827121.

Parkway

The Parkway. 1991.

Opened in 1963 by Reo Stakis Enterprises. The Parkway stands on its own ground and consisted of a public bar, cocktail bar and lounge and an off sales department sometimes known as the family department.

The public bar had soft lights and sweet music, the bar itself was L shaped with elbow rests and it’s frontage carried illuminated panels of old vintage motor cars. The mirrored gantry was well lit with a series of old cars.

The large lounge was divided from the bar by a low partition behind which leather covered wall seating and stools were provided. One wall was covered with black and white wallpaper while the other was panelled and arched. Brass fittings were everywhere. The seated area was covered with a tartan fitted carpet.

From the doorway extending along the bar front the flooring was of red lino.

The cocktail bar and lounge also had an L shaped bar with old cars on the front of the main bar, panells of old cars were in placed of mirrors on the gantry. A carpet of abstract design covered the entire floor area. The seating accomodation here was of rich grey and light brown leather covers and wallseats and stools the chairs were spaced out to give a comfortable feel to the place.

The ceiling was arched in white wood which was very effective. From the ceiling over the seating area were seven copper bulb light fittings while spot lights over the bar counter provided ample soft illumination. On the walls of both the public lounge and the cocktail lounge old time carriage lamps had been used with effect to complete the lighting arrangements.

To the rear of the premises car parking was provided.

Update September 2016..

After a closure of two years. The Old Toll Bar, Paisley Road Toll, is getting a facelift. We at Old Glasgow Pubs went to investigate and to make sure the interior was not in any way dismantled. We got a shock when we first arrived at the Old Toll and discovered lots of wood and black bags of rubble outside the premises. As we went inside the pub the interior was still intact, the outside has been painted as well as the interior. New coats of paint on the walls and new toilets. We should see the Old Toll Bar open in two weeks time.

We received an email from John McGee with a great photo of his father Owen (Owenie) McGee from Donegal, Ireland who owned the Old Toll Bar from around 1976/77 until 1985/86. Owen also owned The Cedarwood Bar in Rutherglen and The Royal Oak in Nitshill Glasgow. Big thanks to John McGee for sending in the information and the photo!

For many years this old pub was called the Old Swan Inn until 1996, it was then called the Stout and Ferret, it is now called 1901 after the date it was built.

However there has been an old Inn on this site since the 1800s and known as the Old Swan Inn.

The Nipp

March 14, 2017 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

418 Parliamentary Road, Glasgow.

The Nipp bar

The Nipp was situated on Parliamentary Road at the corner of Killermont Street.

There was a pub on this site since at least the 1860s.

The first licensee was a gentleman called Colin More who was trading from these premises in 1860. He lived with his family at 10 Killermont Street a few yards from his place of business. Mr More was first a spirit merchant but by the 1870s was registered as a wine and spirit merchant. Colin sadly passed away in 1884 aged 66 he may have retired a year earlier a year before.

Titus Mulholland owned the premises in the 1890s which were very much smaller than that of the pub in the 1930s.

Major alterations were carried out in 1939, proprietor James Sutherland had architect James Taylor Thomson, 212 bath Street to draw up plans for the new pub. Two adjacent shops and part of a third shop at the rear was taken over to make the pub very much larger.

The new Nipp consisted of a semi circular bar counter with an over head canopy with tube lighting. Two new sitting rooms were also installed a new office and lavatory accommodation. Central heating was now a new addition to the pub.

Manager of the Nipp was a gentleman called Arthur McGowan. For seventeen years he was employed here, during which time her served six years with the R.A.F. during the war. Nine years of his service was as manager. He then left to manage the Cathcart Bar, Cathcart Road owned by Mr Brash before joining the staff of Campbell Henderson & Co., wholesale and retail wine and spirit merchants and off-licence traders, whose head office was at 220-222 Broomielaw. When this firm was founded in 1910 they had no travellers employed up until around 1949. The firm were proprietors of the well known Strathduie whisky.

Thanks to Fraser Hamilon for the info on Colin More.
