This old South Side public house was called “The Little Mill Inn.” then changed to “The Wee Mill.” and Chancers.

The Wee Mill. c 1980s.

During the 1930s this public house a great place for a refreshment for the folk after a walk around Richmond Park which was located across the road.

This old pub was first get it’s licence to sell wines, spirits and beer in 1929.

The first licensee was a lady called Margaret H McCann. Mrs McCann was not new to the licensed trade as she had just lost her license at 227 Abercromby Street in the East End of the city due to City Improvements. Margaret took over the licence at 227 Abercromby Street in 1897 at that time she was living at 134 Claythorn Street not far from the Hielan Jessie pub.

The McCann family continued in The Wee Mill until the 1960s, then Cecilia Thomson took over as licensee in 1972. During the 1990s many will remember Allistair Dooey as licensee.

262 Rutherglen Road, Gorbals, Glasgow. G5 0RX. Demolished.

The Cecil sat at the corner of Rutherglen Road and Commercial Road.

The licensees’ name above the door was J R Baxter.

This old pub was established in the early part of the 1880s, landlord David Baxter traded from these premises, he also had pubs on Pollokshaws Road and Brandon Street at the corner of Annfield Street in the east end of the city.

The Cecil. Thanks to the Mitchell Library of this image.

When David died his wife Jane took over the running of the business from 1887 until 1924. One of the barman in the Cecil was James McCarthy who left to live in Dumfries.

After 1924 the licence was transferred to a well known and respected gentleman called Peter McCrudden.

Mr McCrudden held onto the licence for three years then sold it to the Neeson family. One of the last licencee was a Mr Devlin who ran the pub until 1960 after that the pub was demolished as was most of the pub in the area at that time.

I would like to thank Peter Quinn for the first image of the Cecil Bar.

The Braehead Bar.

November 11, 2016 by John Gorevan Leave a Comment

572 Rutherglen Road, Gorbals, Glasgow.

The Braehead Bar was situated at the corner of Rutherglen Road and Braehead Street. Hutchesontown Bowling Club was facing the pub with the Coronation Bar across the Road.

In 1896 Robert Young owned this popular Gorbals hostelry, the Young family continued serving the locals here for over 50 years. Oatlands Sub-post office was a few doors away from the pub, this meant this was once a thriving community with a newsagents, fruit shop, dairy, drapers, grocers and all the shops you needed within a stones throw away. Once you did all the shopping all you had to do was go into one of the numerous public houses that surrounded this community for a wee refreshment.

After the Second World War John Chapman was running the pub, other well known publicans were Peter McKechnie, Kenneth Beaton and Mr Gerald Hurrel. Mr Hurrel formerly ran a pub on Adelphi Street, other members of the family had pubs on the Gallowgate, Lancefield Quay, Bridgegate, Crown Street, and Green Street.
