226 Great Western Road, Glasgow, G4 9EJ. Tel: 0141 332 3532.

Wintersgills. 1991.

This was originally Samuel Dow’s establishment. To read the full history, check back soon for our second book.

Many will still remember this old pub as the Andros Bar, during the 1970s.

Celtic fame Jim Brogan owned this pub, he now owned the Victoria Bar, Kilmarnock Road in the south side of the city.

In the News 1974…

Over goes this massive pile of coins collected by the customers of the Andros Bar, 266 Great Western Road, Glasgow.

Pushing them over is Ronnie Glavin, captain of Patrick Thistle F.C., ; second from the left. The picture also includes Mr. Andrew Ross, licensee of the Andros (right of pillar), and next to him Mr. P. McAllister, manager.

The amount of money in the pile, £333.18, goes to boost the Sick Children’s Outing organised by Glasgow taxi drivers. 1974.

In the NEWS 1976…

Andros Bar, Great Western Road, breaks a world record.

Pile of Pennies breaks a world record.

The pile of coins represents more than £1,181 and standing delightedly on the counter (which had to be specially shored up to take the weight of money) is the Andros Bar, manager Pat McAllister.

A Glasgow public house has broken into the Guinness Book of Records with a massive 8ft. high pile of coins weighing 8cw. and amounting to £1,181 68p, a world record. Previous record in the Guinness Book of Records was for £1,100 22p, in 1973.

The pile was built up over a period of 50 weeks in the Andros Bar of Mr. Andrew Ross, 226 Great Western Road, by manager Pat McAllister. The bulk of the money was donated in 2p coins by patrons, with Mr. McAllister’s wife doing most of the collecting. The staff of 16 also helped by donating their tips.

The money has gone to the Glasgow Taxi Men’s Sick Children’s Outing Fund, by whom the Andros Bar has been presented with a silver cup, with a personal trophy for the owner and the manager.

The toppling over ceremony was performed by TV personality Bill Tennent. After the ceremony a group of 60 invited guests, including many customers, were entertained to a meal and refreshments by Mr. Ross. Included among the guests were Mr. Jack Baillie, area sales manager, Guinness; Mr. George Brown, area representative, Guinness; Mr. Andrew Bell, Glasgow manager, John Walker and sons; and Mr. Malcolm Fraser, area manager, Tennent Caledonian Breweries.

In beating the record, Andros Bar did so within a stipulated period, one calendar year. There had been no stipulated period for the previous record, in 1976.

New Normal Bar

32 Great Western Road, Glasgow.

The New Normal Bar Great Western Road

The New Normal Bar, 32 Great Western Road, after the great fire 1972.

Owner Jimmy Hargan opened this pub after his old premises were demolished, the Normal Bar at number 5 New City Road, and called his new bar “The New Normal Bar” at the start of Great Western Road near the junction of St. Georges’ Cross. The pub was demolished along with the tenement building after a great fire.

In the NEWS November 1972…

Demand for greater precautions after big fire…

Mrs Nancy Ballantyne, convener of Glasgow Corporation police and fire committee, has called for a co-ordination committee to deal with all aspects of fire fighting after a tenement fire on Saturday in which a fireman died trying to rescue a woman, who also died, and 31 other persons were injured.

Twenty-seven firemen have lost their lives in the past 12 years fighting fires in the city. Another councillor, Bailie Albert Long, has called for a full investigation by corporation officials to see if all proper fire precautions were taken.

Mrs Ballantyne’s request is made in a letter which she will hand to Mr William Gray, the Lord Provost, today. In the letter, she will ask that special attention should be paid to all disused property, particularly empty shops beneath occupied tenements.

The fireman who died on Saturday, Sub-Officer Adrian McGill, was said yesterday to have sacrificed his life trying to save the woman, who was trapped on the top floor of a burning tenement in Maryhill Road, Glasgow.

DEMOLITION

The woman, Mrs Alice Mulgrew, aged 48, died after she was brought down from a narrow ledge outside her home by other firemen. In her letter, Mrs Ballantyne refers to the fact that Sub-Officer McGill is the eighth fireman to die this year in fires in the city, seven have died at a warehouse fire in Kilbirnie Street in August.

She will ask the Lord Provost to consider what steps might be taken to have all derelict propery demolished, to have special precautions taken where shops stood empty beneath occupied tenements to ensure the safetly of firemen and the safe entry of fire-fighting vehicles through narrow lanes which were sometimes blocked by cars.

If you want to read more email me and I will tell you the full story.
